Approved Optional Supplements (after five months of age)

Canned Fish - various canned fish in water/brine can be added to the diet either for taste or as a major dietary supplement. Four ounce (106 g) cans of sardines can be added for taste, but for serious dietary supplementation, 15 ounce (425 g) cans of sardines or Jack Mackerel or salmon in 7.5 ounce (213 g) cans or 14.75 ounce (418 g) cans are recommended. The fish pieces may be fed in a separate bowl or put on top or broken up and mixed in with the dry food. Tuna should not be fed on a regular basis. See calorie counts below to adjust kibble. Best supplement of all is sockeye salmon.

Sockeye Salmon Oil - Six 1000 mg capsules should be given daily; better still, use unrefined sockeye salmon oil.

Homemade Diet (after five months of age)

A home made diet using canned fish and whole grain bread may be used. Fish should represent 50 - 80% by calorie count. See below for calorie counts.

Natural/Raw Diet (after five months of age)

Just feed whole uncleaned fish such as herring or mackerel. Newfs can be fed the whole fish frozen.

CAUTION: rraw salmon and trout from the Pacific west coast may have a parasite toxic to dogs, so such fish should be cooked or deep frozen for at least a week.

Calorie Counts

Unaltered Newfs normally require 2000 - 3000 calories/day; altered/senior Newfs usually need 1000 - 2000 calories/day. In cold weather, depending on amount of time spent outside, these caloric requirements may increase by up to 50%.

Please Note

Feeding foods other than those listed above, with the exception of normal dog treats such as dog biscuits, or minor amounts of taste enhancers, to a Hannibal Newf will normally void both the soundness and the longevity guarantees. Receipts or best by stamps proving feed used may be requested if claiming on either one of these guarantees. The temperament guarantee is not affected by food fed. If there should be a problem with the recommended foods, please consult the breeder for other acceptable options.
