Dogs of Canada Commemorative Stamp

Hannibal Kennels has received many honours over the last three decades. The most prestigious honour was having Hannibal's Col. Freeman chosen as the model for a 1988 Canada commemorative postage stamp honouring the Newfoundland breed.

The Dogs of Canada commemorative stamp series was commissioned to celebrate the centenary of the Canadian Kennel Club in 1988. Mia Lane was chosen to immortalize four native Canadian breeds, Tahltan Bear Dog, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, Canadian Eskimo Dog and the Newfoundland.

Born in Hamilton, Ontario, Mia Lane was employed for seven years as a graphic artist with the Halton Region Conservation Authority. Today she works from her home in Adolphustown, near Bath, Ontario, where she also breeds and trains Border Collies. The colour and life which fill her paintings of animals come from careful study and years of observation.

Dear Peter & Maribeth,

Thank you so much for your valuable assistance in producing the Dogs of Canada Newfoundland dog stamp. I appreciate the time you both took to clue me in to the little things (and big!) to look for in a good Newfoundland dog. Hannibal's Freeman, was a most cooperative model and generally, became the basis for my artwork.

I hope you and your fellow Newfoundland breeders are pleased with the results, as well as all Canadian dog lovers!

Your friend,
Mia
